Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Temasek-backed Sembcorp have entered into a joint venture agreement to explore and develop renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives across India, marking a significant step toward achieving the country’s climate goals.
The collaboration will also focus on green ammonia production, bunkering solutions, and reducing emissions in port operations, while exploring other emerging green fuel technologies. The strategic partnership aims to support India’s energy transition and help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors.
BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G Krishnakumar highlighted the importance of the partnership, calling it a key milestone in BPCL’s sustainability journey. He emphasized BPCL’s commitment to becoming a net-zero energy company by 2040, targeting Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and building a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio to drive the transition. He also underlined the collaboration's focus on innovation-led and best-in-class solutions in the green energy space.
Sembcorp, which currently manages six GW of renewable assets in India, sees green hydrogen and green ammonia as critical decarbonisation pathways. This joint venture aligns with India's broader national goals for clean energy and sustainability, with both BPCL and Sembcorp leveraging their respective strengths to lead in renewable and hydrogen-based solutions.
