To improve urban solid waste management in Chhattisgarh, Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) will invest approx. Rs 100 crore to establish a compressed bio gas (CBG) plant in Bilaspur. A tripartite concession agreement was signed between BPCL, Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, and the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) at the Bilaspur Collectorate.
The plant will be set up on 10 acres of land in Kachhar and is expected to process 150 tonne of municipal solid waste daily to generate five to 10 tonne of biogas. The initiative is aimed at promoting organic farming, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating approx. 30,000 employment opportunities per year.
A separate integrated energy unit (IEU) for biogas refilling and electric vehicle charging is also proposed at Koni. The Bilaspur Municipal Corporation has allocated the land at a concessional rate, adjacent to an existing RDF plant. CBG, produced via anaerobic digestion of waste, has high methane content and can substitute CNG in automobiles, industry, and commerce. The MoU was signed on 17 January, 2025, in the presence of CM Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy CM Arun Sao.
