Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has launched Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 17 August, 2025.
The facility, developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, will produce 72,000 tonne of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be blended with natural gas at up to two percent concentration in Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur. This blended gas will be supplied to households, CNG stations, and industries through the existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure.
According to Torrent, this marks India’s largest green hydrogen and natural gas blending project in the CGD sector. Torrent Gas, which already operates 32 CNG stations and supplies over 12,000 households and 73 industries across Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar, plans to expand its distribution network further. CM Adityanath highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s ambitious target of producing one million tonne annually, supported by a state policy to attract investment in green hydrogen projects.
