The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has plans to construct an 18-km-long underground tunnel road in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The project, which would help reduce traffic congestion is estimated to cost around Rs 8,100 crore, or roughly Rs 450 crore per km.
The tunnel will connect Esteem Mall in Hebbal in north Bengaluru to the Central Silk Board junction in the southern part of the city, and will have five entry and exit points. The new tunnel could reduce the travel time to 20-25 minutes. The height of the tunnel will be 10 mtrs. with a traffic speed between 40 kmph and 60 kmph.
The planned entry and exit points are at the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) quarters at Central Silk Board, Lalbagh, Bangalore Golf Club, Palace Grounds, and at the vacant government land next to Esteem Mall in Hebbal.
An elevated corridor was considered as an alternative, but it would involve more tree felling, land acquisition, and traffic disruption for three to four years. The tunnel will have a user fee for maintenance. The best alternative economically is the tunnel road construction.
