Bengaluru is set for a major infrastructure upgrade as the Karnataka cabinet has approved a Rs 9,700-crore double-decker viaduct under Namma Metro Phase 3.
The project, led by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), will integrate elevated metro lines with flyovers along two corridors, a first for the city. The first corridor will cover 28.486 km from J P Nagar fourth Phase to Kempapura on the western Outer Ring Road (ORR), making it Bengaluru’s longest flyover. The second, an 8.635 km stretch, will link Hosahalli to Kadabagere on Magadi Road. Together, they form a 37.121 km double-decker system, reduced from the original 44.65 km plan.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said the cost includes civil works, land acquisition, and design. While the Union government will finance metro lines, the state will share half the flyover cost, with urban local bodies covering 10 per cent and the rest funded by loans. Civil works are expected to begin early next year, with Phase 3 completion now revised to May 2031.
