Bengaluru’s Yellow Line Metro is closer to launch with the Railway Board granting approval for its rolling stock. The 19.15-km corridor, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, including Electronics City, is significant for linking the city's southern tech hub to the broader metro network.
Though physical infrastructure has been ready for months, late delivery of driverless train sets caused commissioning delays. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) expects a third train set soon and anticipates partial operations by June. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection is expected by the end of May, after which BMRCL will need two weeks for any required modifications.
Originally, Chinese firm CRRC was contracted in 2019 to supply 216 coaches under a Rs 1,578 crore agreement, with a local manufacturing requirement. However, failure to deliver led to project hurdles, prompting a partnership with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems to resume progress. Trial runs began in March 2024. Pending final approvals and inspections, the corridor is likely to open partially with limited stops, enhancing Bengaluru’s metro connectivity and easing traffic congestion.
