The Union Railway Ministry has sanctioned Rs 130 crore for the upgrade and expansion of the Siliguri diesel locomotive shed at Siliguri Junction station, boosting its capacity to maintain up to 250 locomotives, up from the current 100. This development will transform it into one of the largest loco sheds in India.
The expansion is set to include the establishment of advanced maintenance and logistics facilities, as well as the installation of modern machinery and plants for the upkeep of Evolution Series locomotives. These advanced locomotives are being manufactured in India through a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec, aimed at meeting both domestic demand and export commitments.
The upgraded shed will play a crucial role in supporting freight and passenger services in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities for local youths in Siliguri, Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars, as well as aligns with Indian Railways' broader modernisation efforts to improve infrastructure and logistics capabilities across the network.
