Bhopal will supply two million litres of water daily (MLD) from the Upper Lake to new industrial units in Bandikhedi village, Bairasia tehsil, supporting the upcoming Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC).
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) will lay a 38-km pipeline from Sanjiv Nagar to Bandikhedi, linking it to the Manuabhan Tekri Filter Plant near Lalghati, which has a 50 MLD capacity. The Rs 371.95-crore EMC project, spread over 210 acres, is being implemented by the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC) under the Centre’s EMC 2.0 scheme.
While authorities assure that a 10 MLD capacity upgrade under AMRUT 2.0 will prevent supply issues, experts warn that additional extraction could overburden the Upper Lake, Bhopal’s main source for about six lakh residents. Currently, the lake provides 86.4 MLD, nearing its 99 MLD limit. Environmental experts urge sustainable reservoir management to prevent drought-like conditions in the future.
