Bokaro Steel (BSL) is set to establish a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity to treat 30 million gallons of sewage water daily, aiming to conserve water and achieve zero liquid discharge, to cater to the BSL Township and the plant.
The STP will treat wastewater generated from industrial and domestic sources, facilitating recycling and reuse in steel production. Currently, BSL uses 39 MGD of potable water, with around 30 MGD of wastewater produced. The STP will reduce the company's reliance on raw water from the Damodar River, saving 4,000-5,000 cubic mtrs. of water per hour, and cutting costs by Rs 50 crore annually. The facility will utilise sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology to ensure that the treated water complies with the required standards.
The project supports national environmental programs like Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission. Alongside the STP, a municipal solid waste management system will be launched, positioning BSL Township as Jharkhand's first city with advanced environmental infrastructure.
