To permanently resolve the chronic drinking water crisis in Agra’s Yamuna-side colonies, the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam has initiated construction of an 85 million liters per day (MLD) intake well in the Yamuna at Poiyia Ghat and a 55 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) nearby.
The intake structure, positioned 3–7 mtrs. inside the river depending on soil conditions, will channel raw water directly to the WTP located half a km away. After treatment, the water will be distributed through a newly laid 231-km pipeline network, providing morning and evening supply to around 55,000 households. The project, expected to be completed within 12–18 months, aims to eliminate residents’ dependence on private tankers and seasonal shortages that have plagued newer Yamuna-belt localities.
The UP Government’s Drinking Water Scheme (Phase I & II) underpins this initiative, ensuring sustainable and equitable water access for the region.
