Container Corporation of India has
planned to develop a container terminal at Durgapur in West Bengal. It is in the
process of acquiring 30 acres of land for which Rs.1.8 crore has already been
paid to the Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority, it is learnt.
The terminal, which would become
operational in 2007-08, will cater to the sponge and pig iron units in the
Durgapur-Asansol industrial belt.
Right now, Concor places three rakes a
month an average for these units at Raniganj railway station, near Durgapur. The
present operation will continue till the terminal is commissioned.
In a related development, sponge and
pig iron units in the Sambalpur-Rourkela belt of Orissa have also urged Concor
to set up a container terminal at Rourkela -- a proposal on which Concor has yet
to decide.
