Under its Yamuna rejuvenation project, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated the process of setting up a fresh batch of sewage treatment plants (STPs) across outer Delhi.
These include a 15 million gallons per day (MGD) plant in Zindpur (Northwest Delhi) and a 17 MGD plant in Mitraon (Southwest Delhi). Additionally, seven smaller decentralized STPs (DSTPs) will be built in Jaffarpur, Kazipur, Galibpur, and Sarangpur. Delhi currently has 37 STPs at 20 locations, with a total installed capacity of 667 MGD but actual utilisation is 565 MGD, leaving a treatment gap of 227 MGD that pollutes drains, water bodies, and the Yamuna.
A senior DJB official noted, “The upcoming series of plants will help bridge the treatment gap of wastewater being generated in the city.” Capacity expansion of the Yamuna Vihar STP from 25 MGD to 55 MGD at Rs 403 crore is underway. Further upgrades include Keshopur-1 (12 MGD to 18 MGD, Rs 133 crore), along with Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli, and Okhla plants (15 MGD collectively, Rs 381 crore).
