The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, a 210 km project designed to reduce travel time between the two cities from six hours to under three, is now expected to open by February 2026.
Initially set for completion by December 2024, the Rs 11,868.6 crore expressway has faced several delays, with the target now pushed to October 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has directed that the expressway be inaugurated only after all four phases are completed. The first phase, from Akshardham to Khekra, is ready, while the second phase to Saharanpur is nearing completion. The third phase is in advanced stages, and the final phase, near Dehradun, is focused on safety and finishing work.
Despite environmental concerns, including large-scale deforestation, compensatory afforestation plans are in place. The expressway will feature Asia's longest elevated corridor through Rajaji National Park, complete with animal underpasses.
