The Standing Committee for the State Wildlife Board has approved the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) proposal for the greenfield NH-75 road project, a 100-km route connecting Kushalanagar to Mysuru.
The project will be executed in four stages, requiring around 54 hectares of land in eco-sensitive areas like the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary and Nagarhole Tiger Reserve's buffer zone. The committee also approved a proposal by the Public Works Department (PWD) to widen the existing road leading to the Sharavathi Lion Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary to aid local residents.
Both proposals, approved under Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre’s chairmanship, will now move to the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife for further clearance. The Sharavathi road widening is linked to a larger pumped storage project, whereby the Minister has recommended the release of 0.976 hectares of forest land for the initiative.
