Coimbatore Corporation has initiated road-laying work as part of the Sanganoor Canal revamp project.
The project, worth Rs 49 crore, aims to remove encroachments, restore the canal's width, and build roads on both sides. The first phase, covering a 2.5 km stretch from Mettupalayam Road to Rathinapuri Bridge, has already seen the construction of retaining walls. The road work will cover 1.5 km, with 300 mtrs. already tarred. The project also includes streetlights and a steel fence along the new road. About 250 families displaced by encroachments have been provided alternative housing. The road will be one-way once completed to improve traffic flow.
A proposal for additional funding of Rs 235 crore for further work on the canal has been submitted. The revamp starts at Mettupalayam Road, with road-laying beginning at Kannappa Nagar and continuing along the canal, passing Sathyamangalam Road, Avinashi Road, Sowripalayam, and connecting to Trichy Road.
