As part of the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project, dredging works commenced in the Chilavannoor Canal on 27 August, 2025, marking a key step in Kochi’s canal transformation.
Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) aims to remove 65,000 cubic metres of soil within six months to deepen the canal and facilitate natural water flow. A KMRL study revealed that delays in dredging and the narrow culvert at Subhash Chandra Bose Road were primary causes of flooding during the rainy season. In response, the state government and Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) approved corrective measures.
The tendering process for culvert reconstruction is nearing completion, while the Bund Road Bridge is progressing swiftly and expected by December. Authorities noted dredging would reduce flood risks, prevent water stagnation, curb mosquito breeding, and improve public health. Industries minister P Rajeeve added that the project would also boost water transport potential through the canal. The Rs 3,716.10-crore project covers six major Kochi canals.
