The foundation stone for India’s first mega green ammonia plant was laid in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh on 17 January, 2026, marking a major step in the country’s clean energy transition.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan inaugurated the Rs 13,000-crore project being developed by AM Green of the Greenko Group. Spread across 495 acres, the plant will have an annual capacity of 1.5 million tonne and will produce completely carbon-free green ammonia, unlike conventional ammonia derived from fossil fuels. The project involves a brownfield conversion of an existing grey ammonia facility of Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals.
Located close to Kakinada Port, it is aimed largely at export markets, with supply agreements already signed with global partners. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the plant aligns with India’s net-zero ambitions and global decarbonisation goals. Hailing the project, CM Naidu said Andhra Pradesh was emerging as a “Kakinada Green Hydrogen Valley” with global relevance. Production is expected to ramp up from 2027.
