Four automobile firms -- Volkswagen Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata, and Bajaj Auto have signed MoUs with the government of Maharashtra. The total investment of the companies is about Rs 11,510 crore.
Mahindra & Mahindra announced a fresh investment of Rs 400 crore to add new capacity at its Chakan unit located near Pune. It plans to augment production of vehicles from the existing 32,000 units per year to 45,000 per year and further to 70,000 in the next seven years. Tata Motors will invest the same amount for its product development and plant upgrade with no capacity expansion.
As per the MoU signed, Volkswagen will invest Rs 1,510 crore in its Chakan plant. Bajaj Auto will invest Rs 2,000 crore at its Aurangabad plant in two phases. It intends to increase the capacity of manufacturing two wheelers and commercial vehicles from 2.28 million units at present to 3.84 million units a year.
