The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to construct an elevated road on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), modeled after the Dwarka Expressway, to enable a signal-free commute between Delhi and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. A consultant was appointed earlier this year to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the 5.5 km stretch between Vatika Chowk and NH-8.
The design proposes a six-lane elevated corridor with no traffic signals and includes multiple ramps for smooth entry and exit. A senior GMDA official said, "Detailed deliberation is currently going on... The corridor will be designed not just for today's needs, but for the mobility requirements of the future." The proposed corridor will connect to NH-8 and the Dwarka Expressway via the existing cloverleaf interchange and extend to the Sohna highway (NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-248A and vice versa.
Originally conceived in 2019, the SPR redevelopment plan was revised after earlier proposals were dropped. In July 2024, CM Nayab Singh Saini approved the project. GMDA has allocated Rs 750 crore, including Rs 620 crore for construction and Rs 130 crore for land acquisition.
