US-based semiconductor giant GlobalFoundries is set to commence operations in Kolkata with Research & Development and testing facilities by late September 2025, as announced by West Bengal's IT & Electronics Minister Babul Supriyo. The facility, to be located in the Software Technology Park of India in Salt Lake, will span approx. 13,000 sq. ft.
This move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 meeting with US President Joe Biden, where the GF Kolkata Centre was announced. "After handing over the space, R&D is the first step, and there are several other phases that are in the fold," the Minister stated. The next phase will include the establishment of a Fabrication Laboratory with significantly higher employment potential.
The Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub is attracting substantial investments. Commitments worth over Rs 30,000 crore have been made, with major players like Reliance Jio, Adani, LT-Mindtree, and TCS acquiring land. Multiple data centres are also set to begin operations soon.
Additionally, Bengal will soon host eastern India’s first cable landing station in Digha, reinforcing its strategic tech position. State policies for semiconductors and Global Capability Centres are underway.
