The popular hill station Kakkadampoyil in Kozhikode district of Kerala is set to be developed into an ecotourism centre through a joint initiative by the Forest Department and Koodaranhi Grama Panchayat, covering approx. 19 hectares of land.
The project was finalised after Forest Minister AK Saseendran’s visit and consultations with local leaders and the panchayat. The development aims to cater to the increasing number of domestic tourists by enhancing facilities at Kakkadampoyil, Nayadampoyil, and Kurishumala.
In the first phase, the Gram Panchayat will focus on creating essential infrastructure such as cafeterias, drinking water points, comfort stations, and ticket counters. A green protocol will be implemented, alongside improved waste management systems. The Forest Department will guide tourists visiting the trekking trails and conduct awareness programmes on wildlife and forest conservation.
Discussions are also underway to establish a dedicated facility for marketing forest products, thereby supporting local livelihoods. Additionally, a Master Plan is being prepared based on recent meetings, which includes developing a flower valley on revenue land within the project area. Members of the Koodaranhi panchayat welcomed the initiative, stating that the long-pending proposal would allow villagers to engage in sustainable tourism ventures, providing them with new economic opportunities.
