The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a USD 125 million loan agreement to improve urban livability and climate resilience across six districts in Assam.
The project targets 3,60,000 residents by providing continuous metered water supply and enhancing stormwater management. Key infrastructure developments include six water treatment plants with a total capacity of 72 million litres per day and the installation of 800 km of distribution pipelines in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, and Nalbari. A real-time monitoring system will be deployed to maintain non-revenue water below 20 percent.
In Guwahati, stormwater management improvements will focus on the Bahini Basin through flood diversion channels, upgraded drainage, and a nature-based retention pond, aiming to reduce flood discharge and boost groundwater recharge. The project also emphasises strengthening urban governance via institutional reforms and capacity building, contributing to sustainable urban development in Assam.
