The Indian Railways is
planning to set up a water treatment and bottling plant at the base of Malang
Hills at Ambernath in Maharashtra.
The proposed plants
will be run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) who
plans to bring out Rail Neer, the packaged purified drinking water within a
year. The corporation plans to manufacture 5 lakh bottles per day from the
Ambernath plant. It will source water for the plant from a reservoir which is
popularly known as GIP(Great Indian Peninsula) Railway Tank in Ambernath.
The IRCTC has chosen
two sites for the setting up water treatment and bottling plant. One of them is
Ambernath and the other site is at Palur in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The IRCTC has already appointed Actuate Management Consultants for techno
economic feasibility study of the water treatment plants at Ambernath and Palur.
The IRCTC will start working out the details of cost and funding pattern after
getting the feasibility report. Thereafter, tenders will be floated to appoint
architects and construction contractors. The existing plants are at Danapur
(Bihar) and Najafgarh (Delhi).
