The Union government has established an interministerial committee to formulate the National Manufacturing Mission, a key initiative aimed at significantly increasing the share of manufacturing in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
According to government sources, the committee will be chaired by BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, and is currently engaging with state governments and industry representatives as part of its consultations.
The National Manufacturing Mission, first announced in the Union Budget 2025, is designed to elevate India’s manufacturing contribution from its current level of 16–17 percent of GDP. The mission will play a pivotal role in furthering the Centre’s flagship Make in India initiative, with a broad focus encompassing small, medium, and large-scale industries.Key focus areas of the mission include the production of quality goods, the simplification of business processes, fostering a future-ready workforce, bolstering the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier stated that the National Manufacturing Mission would strongly emphasise clean technology manufacturing. The mission is set to encourage higher domestic value addition and aims to build a robust ecosystem to support the production of solar PV cells, electric vehicle batteries, motors, wind turbines, and similar components.
The committee’s deliberations are expected to result in actionable policy frameworks and incentive structures that will support industries across sectors and geographies. The government sees this mission as a cornerstone for long-term economic transformation.
