The Karnataka government has signed an agreement with the Gas Authority of India (GAIL) to establish a facility that generates gas from wet waste in Bengaluru.
Announced by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, this initiative will be the first of its kind in the city. GAIL will invest Rs 123 crore in the project, and land has already been allocated by the state government. The new plant will initially process 300 tonne of wet waste per day, producing around 12 tonne of compressed biogas and 21 tonne of fermented organic manure (FOM) daily. This move is aimed at tackling the city's mounting waste management issues while also supplying clean energy to industries and hotels.
The government expressed openness to replicating similar projects through future agreements. The initiative not only promotes sustainable waste disposal but also contributes to renewable energy and urban sanitation goals.
