The Airport Authority of India has
decided to bring up the plan for modernisation and upgradation of the Kolkata
airport for which there will be an investment of Rs.1,542 crore.
The amount put in by AAI will include
the construction of a new terminal for domestic and international traffic and
increasing its capacity to handle over 20 million passengers annually from the
4.4 million currently. About Rs.1,300 crore will be spent for a new terminal and
Rs.100 crore for upgrading the cargo handling facility as well as improving the
runway. Besides another Rs.100 crore will be required to upgrade the
navigational systems.
The first phase of modernisation of
the Kolkata airport will be completed by 2009-10, while decision on
privatisation of the Chennai airport was likely to be taken by 31 May, 2007.
The decision on setting up of
greenfield airports in Navi Mumbai and Pune has not yet been taken as the state
government is yet to submit a final report.
