The Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) is planning to redevelop 121-year-old Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) Chawls at Worli in South-Central Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The project will span over 54 acre of land parcel. Apart from rehousing the existing tenants in the redeveloped structure, the project will also create 16,000 affordable houses. The revamped structure will provide each present tenant with a 500 sq ft apartment, from the existing 160 sq ft.
The housing project will involve redeveloping and rehabilitating of the existing tenants and also creating on-site and off-site infrastructure such as roads, landscaping, open spaces, etc.
The project will be implemented in six to seven phases. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone on April 2017. In December 2017, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) granted terms of reference (ToR) for preparation of an environment impact assessment (EIA) report with some additional conditions.
After much delay, in June 2018 Capacite Infraprojects in consortium with Tata Projects & CITIC Construction Company, bagged an order worth Rs 11,744.26 crore for redevelopment of BDD Chawls at Lower Parel Division.
From the latest development mapped by Projects Today team, it was learnt that the project was still under planning stage as MHADA was still awaiting approval from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
