The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a policy aimed at promoting a circular economy through the treatment and reuse of sewage and wastewater across 424 urban local bodies (ULBs).
The state government has also cleared a provision of Rs 500 crore for the urban development department, for implementing the policy. With nearly 48 percent of the state’s population living in urban regions and growing water demand, the policy seeks to sustainably manage wastewater and promote its reuse for non-potable purposes such as industrial, thermal power, urban, and agricultural use.
A district-level joint monitoring committee, headed by district collectors or municipal commissioners, will oversee implementation, while a state-level steering committee led by the chief secretary will provide oversight. The policy will apply to all major water users, local bodies, implementation agencies, and citizens, aiming to reduce waste, extend resource lifespans, and promote recycling practices in line with circular economy principles.
