The Maharashtra government has approved a Rs 842.85 crore project by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to upgrade nine sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, aiming to reduce pollution in the Mula-Mutha river.
The project will implement sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology to meet updated Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) norms—bringing BOD below 10 and COD below 50. Two old STPs at Bhairoba and Tanajiwadi will be demolished and rebuilt, while others will be upgraded. Funding will come from the Union government with Rs 252.86 crore, the state contributing Rs 210.71 crore, PMC with Rs 20.49 crore, and private partners providing Rs 358.79 crore.
Pune's sewerage network spans 2,200 km, currently treating 477 MLD. Capacity will rise by 396 MLD by 2027 via JICA-funded projects. With a projected population of 1.1 crore by 2047, Pune’s sewage capacity target is 1,450 MLD. The initiative also includes plans for biogas production and water reuse, supporting sustainable urban infrastructure.
