Mumbai’s upcoming Metro Line 4, connecting Gaimukh in Thane to Wadala, will become the city’s first Metro corridor to commence trial runs without a dedicated depot.
Due to delays in constructing the Mogharpada depot, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation (MMMOCL) has issued a Rs 8.28-crore tender to transport eight six-coach trains, totaling 48 coaches, from the Mandale depot in Mankhurd to Metro 4’s viaduct between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction and back. Since Metro Lines 2B and 4 are not physically linked by tracks, the rakes will be hauled over city roads using hydraulic multi-axle trailers.
Each coach weighs approx. 40 tonne, and the transport operation will be conducted primarily at night to minimize traffic disruptions. The process involves dismantling coaches if necessary, securing permissions from multiple civic and traffic authorities, arranging transit insurance, and ensuring safe delivery. The 32-km Metro 4 line is expected to significantly ease congestion on the Eastern Express Highway and boost east-west connectivity in Mumbai and Thane.
