NTPC will mark its entry into nuclear power next month by laying the foundation stone for a 2,800 MW project at Banswara, Rajasthan.
The project, being developed under Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam (ASVINI) – a JV with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) where NTPC holds 49 percent – will house four 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The first unit is expected by 2031, with full commissioning in 2036. Chairman and MD Gurdeep Singh said NTPC plans to “go very aggressive on nuclear,” targeting 30 GW capacity by 2047, in line with India’s national goal of 200 GW nuclear capacity by that year.
NTPC is also engaging with technology providers including Tata Consulting Engineers, L&T, EDF, Rosatom, and Holtec for future projects. India currently has 8,800 MW operational, with 6,600 MW under construction and 7,000 MW in advanced development. Nuclear’s role as a low-emission baseload source has been highlighted, as policy reforms encourage accelerated capacity expansion and private sector entry.
