NTPC has transferred two captive coal mining projects, Chatti Bariatu and Badam in Jharkhand, to its wholly-owned subsidiary NTPC Mining (NML) from 01 October, 2025.
The transfer was formalised through an amended business transfer agreement signed on September 17, following NTPC’s announcement in August to hive off its coal mining business. The Chatti Bariatu mine, operational since April 2024, has a production capacity of seven million tonne per annum (MTPA) and spans 646 hectares, serving as a captive fuel source for NTPC’s power plants.
The Badam coal block, with reserves exceeding 90 million tonne and a proposed capacity of 2.5-3 MTPA, faces delays due to land acquisition issues. NTPC Mining has been created to consolidate and manage NTPC’s coal mining operations and develop all allotted coal blocks efficiently.
