Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National War Memorial near India Gate in New Delhi to the nation on 25 February 2019.
The National War Memorial is a tribute to soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation post-independence.
The National War Memorial is spread over 40 acre. It is a commemoration of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers since Independence with the names of 25,942 martyrs engraved on stones. The cost of the project is Rs 176 crore.
The layout of the National War Memorial comprises four concentric circles, namely, ‘Amar Chakra’ or Circle of Immortality, ‘Veerta Chakra’ or Circle of Bravery, ‘Tyag Chakra’ or Circle of Sacrifice, and ‘Rakshak Chakra’ or Circle of Protection.
The eternal flame and obelisk are located in the innermost chakra (Amar Chakra). The obelisk stands at a height of 15.5 mtr and is visible from a distance.
Surrounding this is Veerta Chakra with six bronze murals depicting battle actions and each mural weighs between 600 kg and 1,000 kg.
Tyag Chakra is made entirely of granite bricks and each bears names of the fallen soldiers since Independence.
Rakshak Chakra consists of over 600 trees which represent the soldiers who protect the country. The memorial also features artificial lighting in the evenings, and a walking plaza.
Adjacent to the main complex lies a tribute to the 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees with each recipient honoured by a bronze bust at Param Yoddha Sthal.
