PowerGrid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) will be investing around Rs Rs
20,000 crore during the 11th Five-Year Plan period to provide transmission
system to four ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) of 4,000 MW each. They are
Reliance Power's Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Tilaiya (Jharkhand), Krishnapatnam
(Andhra Pradesh) and Tata Power's Mundra UMPP in Gujarat. The investment will be
funded through a combination of internal accruals and borrowings from
multi-lateral agencies.
The above investment is a part of PGCIL's total investment of Rs 55,000 crore
lined up for laying new transmission lines for various projects, including four
UMPPs and others to be commissioned, in the 11th and 12th plan period. The
company targets to add 37,800 MW of inter-regional transmission capacity in the
11th Plan. Its current capacity is 28,000 MW. During the January - March 2009
period, the company has approved investment of Rs.20,000 crore. The same will be
awarded after 16 May 2009, when the model code of conduct for the general
election will come to an end.
