PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Phase-I of the Mopa International Airport in northern Goa on 11 December 2022. The new airport has been built is scheduled to begin operations on 5 January 2023.
GMR Goa International Airports (GGIAL), a concessionaire is setting up an international airport at Mopa in Pernem taluka of North Goa. The project is spread over 2,271 acres of land, implemented in 4 phases at a total cost of Rs 4,500 crore. Phase I will include a runway, with half parallel taxiway and three runway exits. Phase II includes one runway with a full parallel building, security area and control points, GSE storage, parking, technical area, cargo, maintenance, general and business aviation areas, road network, rail connectivity and airport city.
The airport will cater to 4.4 million passengers in the first phase and 13.1 million by the end of the fourth phase. The project will have the potential to handle 30 million passengers annually.
