The Rajasthan government has launched an initiative to expand food grain storage capacity under the cooperative sector, aiming to safeguard farmers’ produce from wastage caused by adverse weather and limited storage.

Under the ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ programme, both state and Central governments are driving construction of godowns in districts with high production but insufficient storage. In the 2024-25 budget, Rs 31 crore was allocated for 100 new godowns of 500 million tonne capacity and for revamping 50 dilapidated ones. For 2025-26, the state earmarked Rs 45 crore for 100 additional godowns of 500 million tonne capacity, 50 of 250 million tonne capacity, and reconstruction of 100 older units.

Alongside, approval under the National Agriculture Development Scheme enables 48 godowns of 500 million tonne capacity. Overall, over 1,60,000 million tonne of new capacity is targeted during 2024-26. Progress is visible, with 36 godowns already completed and approvals issued for many others. The initiative is expected to reduce distress sales, cut transportation costs, curb wastage, and increase cooperative societies’ income through rentals.
