The redevelopment of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamaraj Nagar slums in Ghatkopar officially began with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis laying the foundation stone on 14 October, 2025.
The Rs 1,299-crore project, jointly managed by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), aims to complete construction within 36 months. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced plans for a memorial honoring Mata Ramabai Ambedkar at the site. This cluster redevelopment is crucial due to the Eastern Freeway corridor expansion, requiring relocation of slum clusters. The project will provide around 17,000 families with free, modern 300 sq. ft. homes, freeing land for vital infrastructure.
The initiative, initially proposed under former CM Prithviraj Chavan, gained momentum under the BJP government, with no private builders involved, ensuring quality and transparency. Over 10,000 households have been verified and signed agreements to participate.
