Himachal Pradesh has cleared a Rs 1,734.70-crore ropeway project in Shimla, Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri announced on 06 September, 2025.
Spanning 13.79 km, the system will have three lines, 14 sections and 13 stations, linking critical points such as the Secretariat, schools, hospitals, the railway station and ISBT. Construction is expected to take four years. In parallel, Shimla will see 22 Smart City Mission projects worth Rs 75 crore by December 2026. The state is also advancing multiple ropeways: Baba Balaknath (Rs 65 crore), Bijli Mahadev (Rs 278.62 crore) and Mata Chintpurni (Rs 76.50 crore), all scheduled for June 2027 completion. Work is ongoing on the 1.20 km Dhalpur–Peej ropeway in Kullu (Rs 80 crore).
Himachal inaugurated India’s first rural ropeway at Baglamukhi in December 2024, built for Rs 53.89 crore, which has ferried nearly 69,000 passengers and proved crucial in disaster relief. Looking ahead, a 38 km Shimla–Parwanoo ropeway worth Rs 5,602.56 crore is planned under a PPP model.
