Shakroli water supply scheme in Shimla, which aims to provide round-the-clock drinking water to the city is nearing completion as it enters its final stage.
Managed by Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam (SJPNL), the scheme is expected to begin lifting water this month, with initial pumping directed to the Sanjauli reservoir for city-wide distribution. Although initially scheduled for completion by 2025, the project faced delays and conducted a successful trial in November 2025, marking a key milestone. Once fully operational, it will add 67 million litres per day (MLD) to Shimla’s supply, alleviating long-standing water shortages. The water is lifted from the Sutlej at Shakroli village, with a 24-km pipeline and three pumping stations in place. Currently, the city’s daily water requirement is about 45 to 48 MLD.
Virender Thakur, Managing Director of SJPNL, stated, "The project is almost complete and will soon be functional," emphasizing the focus on chlorination initially, followed by ozonation to improve water quality.
