The Odisha government has decided to conduct a comprehensive survey in urban areas facing drinking water shortages to improve the potable water system.
The Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) will assess source sustainability, treatment and storage capacities, and distribution efficiency, particularly during peak summer months. This initiative will help prioritsze interventions and investments. The state also plans to address Bhubaneswar's growing water demand, which currently faces a gap of 65.5 million litres per day. At present, water is sourced from the Mahanadi, Kuakhai, and Daya rivers and supplied through six water treatment plants (WTPs) situated at Mundali, Palasuni, Chandrasekharpur, Naharkanta, Bhuasuni, and the High-Level Tank systems, according to the officials.
A new 130 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) at Mundali is expected to be operational within six months, while another 20 MLD WTP at Naharkanta will be ready by 2028. "WATCO will ensure improved water supply to all apartments and institutions in Bhubaneswar," stated an official. The state is also considering long-term water sourcing proposals for the city's future needs.
