Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) has begun laying underground extra high tension (EHT) transmission cables to upgrade the Mannarpuram substation in Trichy.
The project, costing Rs 26.71 crore, aims to enhance the power supply in busy areas such as Cantonment, Central Bus Stand, and Senthanneerpuram. The upgrade will increase the substation's capacity from 33/11 KV to 110/11 KV, tripling the current load capacity to meet rising demand. A seven-km EHT cable will be laid, with 2.4 km of underground cables running along busy highways from Mannarpuram to Edamalaipattipudur.
For the first time in the region, horizontal directional drilling will be used to minimise road disruptions while laying cables. Additionally, 16 power towers will be erected from Sathanur to Edamalaipattipudur to support the system upgrade. Once completed, the new setup will reduce power interruptions and improve the reliability of the city's power supply.
