Tata Projects has secured a contract to build an advanced semiconductor assembly and test (ASAT) plant for Micron Technology in Sanand, Gujarat. The groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Pujan) of the plant was held on 23 September, 2023.
The new plant situated in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) area of Chharodi covers an expansive 93 acres of land. In the Phase-1, the development will comprise a 5,00,000 sq. ft. cleanroom space, which is expected to be operational by late 2024.
Earlier, Micron had announced plans to develop India’s first semiconductor unit for USD 2.75 billion. For this purpose, Micron will be investing USD 825 million (approx. Rs 6,760 crore) and the balance amount will come from the government in two phases. The project includes the design and construction of a first-of-its-kind DRAM and NAND assembly and test facility in India.
This partnership is in line with Tata Projects' commitment towards sustainable development, and advancing technology as well as contributing towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Micron has appointed Tata Projects to construct its new facility.
The Sanand factory will be designed in accordance with LEED Gold Standards of the Green Building Council, and will also integrate advanced water-saving technologies to enable a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system. Moreover, DRAM is the memory used to store code for algorithms, processes and NAND is the memory used to store data for pictures, music, etc.
