Tata Steel has chalked out an investment plan of Rs 1,100 crore to expand
capacity of its iron ore mines at Joda (Orissa) and Noamundi (Jharkhand).
Around Rs 600 crore is expected to be spent on expansion of the Joda mines
while the balance Rs 500 crore on Noamundi mines.
On completion, which is expected in two years, the production of Joda mines
is likely to double to eight million tpa and an increase of seven to more than
nine million tpa at mines in Noamundi.
Tata's Jamshedpur plant requires 10-11 million tpa of ore annually to meet
the current level of production of about seven million tpa of crude steel and
the requirement is met almost entirely by Joda and Noamundi mines. The
requirement it is estimated to rise to 16-17 million tpa when the plant will be
ready to produce 10 million tpa of crude steel from 2011.
