The Telangana government is preparing to seek Maharashtra’s approval in early November for the Tummidihatti barrage, a critical part of the long-pending Pranahitha-Chevella irrigation project.
With the detailed project report (DPR) set for completion by month-end, Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, and officials plan to meet Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis following inter-state Secretary-level discussions. Telangana expects Maharashtra to agree to a barrage height of 150 metres— slightly higher than the 148 mtrs.agreed upon in 2016, but lower than the 152 mtrs. earlier proposed and rejected due to submergence concerns.
Geotechnical surveys at Tummidihatti and Sundilla are complete, and about 71 km of existing canal infrastructure—70 percent already constructed, can be reused. Water can flow entirely by gravity from Tummidihatti to Sundilla, bypassing the need for multiple lifts and reducing costs. Two routes beyond Mylaram are under consideration, with a gravity-fed path to Sundilla seen as the most efficient. Officials believe leveraging existing assets could fast-track irrigation goals.
