The Union government has approved the Jharkhand government's proposal to establish four new medical colleges in the districts of Khunti, Jamtara, Dhanbad, and Giridih.
Khunti and Jamtara will have 50 MBBS seats each, while Dhanbad and Giridih will have 100 seats each. The approval, announced by the health department on Tuesday, follows a detailed presentation by Ajoy Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary in Jharkhand’s health department, to the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) in Delhi.
These medical colleges will be set up under the government’s public-private partnership (PPP) model, with the Central government providing 40 percent capital expenditure (capex) and 25 percent operational expenditure (opex) support. The new colleges aim to improve medical education, healthcare services, and employment opportunities, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, addressing the shortage of specialist doctors.
