The University of Liverpool is set to open its first Indian campus in Bengaluru by August 2026, following the receipt of a formal letter of intent (LoI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
This makes it the second UK-based university to establish a presence in India, after the University of Southampton, which is launching a campus in Gurugram this year. The Bengaluru campus will initially offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in business management, accounting and finance, computer science, and biomedical sciences.
The inaugural batch will comprise a few hundred students, with a long-term plan to expand enrolment to 5,000 by 2031 and 10,000 by 2036, said Vice-Chancellor Tim Jones. The initiative aligns with the UGC’s 2023 regulations enabling top-ranked foreign universities to establish campuses in India, part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms. Indian students will also benefit from a global mobility scheme offering exposure to international academic environments.
The university has also signed MoUs with several partners including AstraZeneca Pharma India, and Wipro. British Council’s Alison Barrett highlighted that this move will enhance academic collaboration, promote cross-cultural exchange, and support the internationalisation of Indian higher education.
