Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan chaired a review meeting of the Irrigation and Minor Irrigation Departments at the Secretariat to assess the progress of ongoing projects and emphasised timely completion.
Secretary Dr. R Rajesh Kumar presented a comprehensive report on key projects across the state. Chief Secretary directed that strict timelines be established for every phase of each project and called for continuous monitoring at both Secretary and Head of Department levels. He urged prioritisation of regions with high irrigation demand and recommended leveraging Gram Panchayat committees to manage local irrigation operations such as canals, tube wells, and lift canals.
The CS stressed frequent reviews for key projects like the Jamrani, Song, and Baliyanala Landslide Treatment initiatives and urged expedited forest and environmental clearances for the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Reservoir. Dr. Kumar stated that projects like the Rs 3,808.16 crore Jamrani Dam and Rs 2,491.96 crore Song Dam are on track for completion by 2030 and 2029 respectively, alongside watershed rejuvenation efforts by IRI Roorkee.
Solar energy's role in sustainable irrigation has also been emphasised. He proposed installing solar power plants on vacant departmental lands, targeting the generation of one MW of solar energy within the year to reduce electricity costs.
