Videocon Industries will be setting up
a semiconductor design-cum-fabrication complex at an initial investment of
Rs.1,000 crore near Kolkata, West Bengal. The facility, spread over 100 acres of
land and will incorporate R&D, training, incubation and commercial activities
under one complex and would specifically focus on thin film transistor
technology.
Videocon has already taken over the
Kanchan Food Processing facility in North Bengal and has converted it into a
television and computers manufacturing unit. The company has also taken over a
consumer electronics unit of the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development
Corporation and has proposed to set up a finishing school for technicians and
industrial workers.
The company also proposes to set up
two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) partnering with India Design Centre that was
to set up at Salt Lake. The India Design Centre will leverage upon the domain
expertise of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
The company plans to set up an
IT-cum-biotechnology SEZ at Dabgram near Siliguri for which the land owned by
the state housing department will be handed to Videocon through the Siliguri
Jalpaiguri Development Authority. The other proposed IT-cum-biotechnology SEZ
will be set up at Kharagpur.
