GlobalFoundries, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, is establishing a design and testing centre in Kolkata's Salt Lake IT hub, with potential future plans for semiconductor fabrication. The West Bengal government has provided the company with approx. 19,000 sq. ft. of space at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) IT Park, with 13,000 sq. ft. already in possession. This initiative follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2024 meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, emphasising strengthened India-U.S. tech partnerships.
In addition to GlobalFoundries, Santech Global, a U.S.-based semiconductor and nanoelectronics innovator, has also expressed interest in setting up operations in Kolkata. The state aims to develop a robust semiconductor ecosystem, which includes fostering collaboration between startups, academia, and industry players. Plans are underway for joint internship programs with local universities and GlobalFoundries to benefit students in West Bengal.
State government sources confirmed, “We are in consultation with GlobalFoundries to extend all support. We will contribute to a robust semiconductor ecosystem in West Bengal and a shared vision for technological advancement.” A Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy is also in development to attract further investments and create employment opportunities for local youth.
