The industrial development plan linked to the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala is gaining momentum, with Vizhinjam International Seaport (VISL) set to appoint a consultant to prepare a comprehensive strategy for port-led industrialisation.
The consultant will be tasked with conducting a feasibility study, identifying land parcels, and devising a cluster development plan for sector-specific industrial zones, such as logistics, food processing, and manufacturing. At a recent high-level meeting, the state government authorised VISL to acquire at least 200 acres of land in the first phase. This will be used to develop container yards, warehouses, and support infrastructure to align with the commencement of gateway cargo operations.
To facilitate early cargo movement, the state has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to approve a temporary road connecting the port to NH-66 near Thalakode. A permanent cloverleaf interchange—estimated to cost Rs 360 crore and require 30 acres,is also being considered, with costs to be split equally between the state and NHAI. VISL has already paid Rs 11 crore to landowners for 36 cents of land.
A nine-km rail tunnel linking the port to Balaramapuram is also planned, with tenders expected this month.
